The 5 Engineer Personalities We All Have on Our Team

Creating the perfect team of engineers is very critical for the success or failure of any project. With different types of positions and personalities working on an uncountable number of different tasks, it would be interesting to discover the different engineer profiles we can spot in every team, and the skills of each one of them.

Engineering is such a vast study that narrowing down the different fields of work would take ages. However, wouldn’t it be intriguing to uncover the common personalities of engineers that we can find in almost every team?

The Leading Engineer

Also known as the “swiss army knife”. This engineer is a generalist, handling the operational and strategic plans of any project. By overlooking the whole workflow, this character not only handles the deliverables of projects but also encourages and empowers team members. In a way, these types of members are a role model to everyone as they juggle between the logistics and planning and make sure the team members are communicating their concerns in order to be preventive of any controllable issues that might occur at any phase of their work.

The Creative Artist

This engineer is the “idea person” of every team. Such profile combines the thinker and the doer by trying to make any creative idea come to life no matter the constraints. One unique trait is being keen on delivering a project that is not only mechanically responsive, but also esthetically appealing to the end user. This personality requires to be heard, regardless of whether or not the ideas will be taken into consideration.

The hands-on worker

100% committed to their work, these engineers like to work with their hands. They know that knowledge is power, but they actually believe that it’s not only about the amount of information you know; it’s how you use it.  And even though the majority of the team might share the same discipline and a similar educational background, not everyone uses that knowledge in the same way.

“The Matrix” wannabe

When it comes to these types of personalities, they are the most innovative and motivated. Even though they might burn-out faster than others because of their constant thrive to innovate, they spend a lot of time conceptualizing and doing extensive research to see how they can take each project to the next level and be more avant garde. The Matrix movie reference would refer to how futuristic some of their ideas can get, which might be frustrating if the technology is not ready for their concepts yet.

The Proud Geek

As more and more people are embracing the term “geek” and becoming enthusiasts in their interests, it is quite interesting to see how nowadays this word no longer has a negative connotation. The word generates a lot of self-confidence for engineers and IT specialists to the point where it has become primarily a self-descriptive term. So, when these types of engineers proudly introduce themselves as geeks during meetings and project presentations, it is certain that this nickname was brought to life by a lot of hard work, knowledge, and pride.

At the end of the day, these various personality traits make great engineers and an even greater team who will undoubtedly excel in any given project.
