Start of the Academic Year 2020-21 at ESILV: Hybrid Formula and Compliance with Health Policies

The ESILV generalist engineering school is welcoming its engineering-students and new students in the preparatory cycle, in bachelor’s and master’s degree programs for the 2020-21 academic year. This year, due to the sanitary crisis, the courses are a mix of both online and in-person classes.

The 7500 students enrolled at Pole Léonard de Vinci are back to campus from Tuesday 1st September, with health measures in place.

“As you know, the Covid-19 pandemic will continue to impact our lifestyles during this year’s return to campus. It’s complicated to foresee the evolution of the virus, and we have to show agility in organising this year’s activities. According to the Ministry of Education’s guidelines, we have to maintain a distance of at least 1 meter between students during their classes”. (Pascal Brouaye, ESILV Dean, Leonard de Vinci Group President)

In this particular climate, the Pole Leonard de Vinci has set up a plan to ensure the safety of everybody, while figuring out measures to maintain all events and activities.

Hybrid teaching, respectful of the health rules

With 70% of classes delivered through a hybrid formula and 30% through in-person instruction, the professors are enabled to link in-person and remote learning. In-class and online students can work together, while at home or on campus synchronously via the hybrid instructional model.

 Course sessions are recorded and made available to all students following the live session, so that they can avoid technical issues during virtual classes. To maintain social distance while they are in class, students attend campus in-person every other day.

€ 1 million investment in technical equipment

In this remote age, Pole Leonard de Vinci has been committed for several years in the process of digitalisation of the teaching and learning practises at its three schools: ESILV (Superior School of Engineering Leonard de Vinci), EMLV (Superior School of Management Leonard de Vinci) and IIM (Institute of Internet and Multimedia).

As a result, it also brings the need to adapt the teaching to the new methods of training, ranging from augmented in-class courses to 100% online. The Pole equipped all its classrooms with video-conferencing systems (intelligent cameras, high definition acoustic panels, display screens for remote sessions) to implement a telepresence system.

At this time, interactivity and collaboration are the keywords of the pedagogy, and active pedagogies use tools and software such as Klaxoon, Zoom, Teams, Discord, LMS (Learning Management System)…

Faculty training to enhance student experience

In addition to investments and equipment, teachers are at the forefront of pedagogic innovations, which require increased qualification of the faculty staff.

Permanent and temporary teachers are at the centre of a massive training plan (nearly 500 persons) which takes which take many faces at the Pole Leonard de Vinci :

  • handling new technical tools
  • scripting of online courses
  • interaction management in hybrid classes with the aim of providing an experience that is more in-person than ever

The integration week concludes with an inter-school Climate Fresco. This participatory workshop allows students from all three schools to exchange and deepen their knowledge on the causes and consequences of climate change.
