Investir Day 2019 : ESILV’s Engineering students win 2 top Prizes at Speech and Trading Contests

On 3 October, two students named Houssameddine Ghorab et  Thomas Broun stood out above their competitors from 6 other grandes ecoles in the first edition of Investir Day (Investing Day) .

After a competitive analysis of all finalists, the judges selected from a pool of directors of France’s biggest industrial companies (Airbus, Air Liquide, l’Oréal, LVMH, Total) awarded the 1st prizes of Speech and Trading contests to the two winners from ESILV, school of engineering.

Investir Day is a high-level annual event on financial markets that gathered more than 4 000 investors, financial experts, France’s CAC 40 bosses and over 150 speakers on flagship topics, such as: financial education, understanding the stakes of the Stock Exchanges Market, individual ownership.

The Investir Day’s co-organizers, Les Echos and Le Parisien newspapers, Boursier.com website and the radio station “Radio Classique” have partnered with six grandes ecoles including the Pôle Universitaire Léonard de Vinci with its two schools, EMLV and ESILV, HEC, ESSEC, EDHEC, Grenoble école de management and ESCP.

Pitch Contest Winner: Houssameddine, 2020 batch engineering student

Houssamedine Ghorab  is an Investment advisor at Vinci Investments – The Pôle’s Universitaire Léonard de Vinci Finance Student Association. He literally managed to persuade the jury to its side in 5 minutes. As a part of the section dedicated to the Responsible Finance, Houssamedine gave a representation on: “How to give a meaning to one’s investments? “.

“I structured my speech as a story to grab everybody’s attention and to make the topic easy to understand, despite its level of technicality. Therefore, I told the story of a child wondering about how his father could make a better world through finance”.

The dad explains its solutions and actions on responsible finance, but finally he realizes that the most valuable investment was to spend a few minutes with his teaching him to earn, save and spend responsibly.

Trading Contest Winner: Thomas, 2022 batch engineering student

Financial Engineering student Thomas Broun, and president of Student Association Vinci Investments, experimented a short strangle strategy on euro stock market. Thomas started its trading day with €10 000 in virtual funds and made 25% profit in less than a day.

He was interviewed by Les Echos at the Investir Day’s temporary studio, for the occasion.

Thomas thought in terms of macro outlook of the stock market, which allowed him to profit from the U.S. stock market crash.

Contrary to a graph-based technical analysis standing on the relationship between selling pressure and buying interest, the macro analysis allowed me to frame a global vision on the market trends. I also applied this long-short portfolio strategy in my personal investments.

Originally a family business, his passion for trade made him to invest himself in the Vinci Investments’ Asset Management Hub.

This day allowed our association and school to be more visible to the potential partners of our student investment fund.

Even though it’s necessary to learn theory fundamentals and mathematical models, investing/trading in stock market is not rocking science. Traders need to develop their tenacity, ethics, innovative and cooperation capacity, team spirit, self-confidence, humility and sense of responsibility.

By bringing Bloomberg terminals to curriculum, ESILV school of engineering enables its students to get hand-on experience and therefore, to build their self-confidence. They get the edge needed to go into the live markets with zero fear and a certification that will boost their CVs.
