Passion for Aeronautics: Seven Engineering Projects by LeoFly Student Club

In engineering school, learning does not happen in the classroom alone. That’s why ESILV encourages students to participate in various aeronautics student clubs on the Pole Leonard de Vinci Higher Education campus in Paris. As a part of this year’s practical pedagogy activities, the LeoFly Aero Club is organising seven different hands-on engineering projects.

Whether through its own projects or in conjunction with institutions, LeoFly gets students involved in aeronautical and aerospace projects throughout their engineering studies. This year, the ESILV’s aero club is embarking the engineering students on 7 federative, career-building missions.

The students can thus gain first-hand experience in aerospace by combining their passion, engineering studies in Paris and community life.

The work of these group projects is part of the 5-year engineering curriculum at ESILV, under the guidance of teaching and research staff and recognized as part of the practical training for the Master in Engineering’s degree.

FUSEX

The FUSEX will be launched as part of the national C’Space launch campaign and will travel to an estimated altitude of 1.5 km. The objective of this project is to produce a rocket containing experiences that have been developed during the year.

Skills required :

  • Modelling: 3D Experience
  • Programming
  • Manufacturing (composite)

Airship flight

LéoFly is competing in the Float, Lift & Fly Contest, organised by Planète Sciences in partnership with Flying Whales. This competition aims to make students (re)discover airship technology. The idea is to design an airship transportation system that can grip, carry and drop a specific load.

Skills required:

  • Modelling: 3D Experience
  • Programming

Remote tracking for rocket launch

The remote tracker project is an emerging solution for the mini-rocket and Fusef projects launched as part of the Planète Sciences series. The objective of this project is to produce a remote tracker system that can monitor the take-off of a rocket of up to 30m/s with the help of a camera.

Skills required:

  • Modelling: 3D Experience
  • C++ programming
  • Real-time data retrieval
  • Motor control & serving
  • Image recognition

Perseus

The PERSEUS programme involves projects divided into 5 categories: launch systems, studies and software, electrical systems, ground demonstrations, flight demonstrations.

Skills required:

  • Modelling: 3D Experience
  • Manufacturing: machining
  • Programming

Model Aircraft

The aim of the project is to build an RC model aircraft. The selected model will be an A320 on a 1:30 scale. It will be made of fibreglass and carbon fibre and will be about 1.5m long. This device will be controlled from the ground.

Skills required:

  • Modelling: 3D Experience & Simulation
  • Manufacturing: composite
  • Programming: remote flight control

Wind tunnel

The aim of this project is to build an educational wind tunnel for the Pole Leonard de Vinci. It will be used to study the effects of flow in contact with a surface during the different practical training sessions.

Skills required :

  • Modelling: 3D Experience & Simulation
  • Electronics
  • Manufacturing: composite

Embedded system

The project team is responsible for improving the range of electronic circuits within LeoFly works. Its members will also act as consultants to the other projects in order to help them with their various tasks.

Skills required :

  • Electronic circuit design
  • PCB design
  • Low-level programming: C/C++
