Nour, Class of 2026: A Journey from Tunisia to France in the Data and AI Major

Nour Affes, an exchange student from Tunisia, has embarked on an academic adventure in Paris at ESILV School of Engineering. Her school’s list of partner institutions drove Nour’s decision to come in France.

After reviewing the available programs, she was captivated by the curriculum offered at ESILV, especially with its location in Paris and La Défense, the city’s renowned business district. It was the most complete programme she found, emphasizing Paris’s unique blend of location and academic excellence.

Following the path of data and AI excellence

The school’s global reputation influenced Nour’s decision to study in Paris, particularly at ESILV, which has many high rankings. With many certifications and accreditations, Nour sees the school’s reputation as a significant asset for future job prospects, particularly when seeking internships or employment.

Before arriving in France, Nour had already completed significant studies in Tunisia. She attended a pre-engineering school for two years before starting a year of engineering school.

Her interest in the Data & Artificial Intelligence Major stemmed from her interdisciplinary nature, particularly in computer science, business, and mathematics, highlighting her enthusiasm for the subject.

The visa process to come to France

While the academic pursuit was evident, the journey to France wasn’t without its challenges.

The visa process, in particular, was a hurdle, as Nour described it as “pretty difficult” with extensive paperwork and a lengthy procedure. However, she completed everything on time, allowing her to begin her studies in Paris.

To that end, ESILV helps students arrive as smoothly as possible through the Welcome Desk department. They are always available to answer any questions students may have regarding their arrival in France, regardless of the programme (exchange student or degree-seeking student).

Though initially planning to stay for just two semesters, Nour expressed hope of possibly extending her time in France, contingent on future opportunities and discussions with her school’s administration.

Applying for an exchange program at ESILV

According to Nour, the process of applying for an exchange program involves ranking students based on their academic scores and matching them with their chosen school.

ESILV encourages international openness and has developed numerous partnerships with foreign universities to facilitate academic exchanges, allowing French students to study in partner universities and foreign students to study at ESILV.

Upon her arrival, she was surrounded by international peers in Paris. She attended the integration days organized by the ESN DeVinci Association, where she made friends from across Europe, South America, and India.

Adapting to the Parisian way of living

Paris itself played a significant role in her decision to study abroad. Describing the city as “vibrant” with endless opportunities, she enjoys Paris’s energy and cultural richness, even to students.

Nour’s fluency in French, honed during her education in Tunisia, eased her transition into Parisian life. While most of her courses are taught in English, she appreciates the opportunity to engage with professors in both languages, especially during practical sessions, which she enjoys for their interactive nature.

Reflecting on her academic experience, Nour expressed satisfaction with the engaging classes, especially those related to data and AI. She is also enthusiastic about the soft skills courses, which encourage critical thinking about the role of engineers in society, technology, and environmental development.

Advice for international students

When asked if she had any advice for future exchange students, Nour emphasized the importance of early preparation and enjoying the process.

Her key message is not to stress and, most importantly, enjoy the process.
