Into the Magical World of 3D Printing and Emerging Markets

In 2015, a bold statement was made: 3D printers will one day become common product-design and manufacturing devices. Now in 2020, the 3D-printing market has crossed the 1 million-unit threshold and by 2018, the trends were pointing towards a significant opportunity quickly coming into focus.

Not only is 3D printing changing the traditional workplace, it’s also lighting the way for new emerging markets with bigger opportunities in sectors such as healthcare, fashion, engineering, and even art!

3D printing and Entrepreneurship

The 3D-printing is no longer “just a trend”, to the point where it began paving its way into new markets by creating a new generation of entrepreneurs who purchase 3D printers to fuel start-ups, speed up innovation at established companies, and reduce manufacturing costs across many industries.

What Were the Emerging Market Opportunities?

3D printer manufacturers and suppliers of the physical printing materials, such as a specially made plastics, to end-users are driving billions in revenue. In fact, according to Statista: The worldwide market for 3D printing products and services is anticipated to reach around 35.6 billion U.S. dollars by 2024.

The industry is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 22.5 percent between 2020 and 2024.

For emerging markets, 3-D printing was the solution. In China for instance, 3-D printing has been adopted by the housing sector. Domestically, the demand for residential construction is strong and not stopping anytime soon.

In addition, growing technologies in engineering have resulted in the creation of bolder materials like fiber-reinforced Ductal, 10 times stronger than concrete with twice the shelf life and tailor-made for 3-D printers to be able to build giant functional robots and smart homes.

At some point in the future, it may even be possible to 3-D print sustainable houses: some design agencies are experimenting with upcycling, repurposing waste products into building material, thus lowering costs and reducing the need for landfills.

As for the Impacted Sectors…

The capabilities of 3D printing are far from fully realized. Here are a few sectors that are being completely altered by this technology. To name a few:

  • Manufacturing
  • Prototyping
  • Bio-engineering
  • Clothing and textile
  • Home improvement
  • Aerospace
  • Healthcare

3D-printing technology is transforming the way we design and manufacture, but it also has the ability to transform the way we affect other populations and even people with physical disabilities and change the way they live forever:
