Capital market, risk management, trading, fintech… Students in the Financial Engineering major offered by French Engineering school ESILV must complete a four to six month internship in their fourth year of studies. Some of them have joined major banks or fintech companies to complete high-level engineering missions.
Here are five work placements by engineering students, related to finance and fintech.
Internships are mandatory at ESILV, for gaining significant experience during the engineering studies enhances graduates’ hiring opportunities. ESILV financial engineering graduates occupy positions at banks such as Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley or Banque Populaire.
A blockchain and development mission for LiquidShare, European fintech blockchain
The European fintech blockchain LiquidShare was founded by banks BNP Paribas, Société Générale, Euroclear and Euronext among other partners. This independant startup develops a post-trade blockchain infrastructure for SMEs.
The ESILV financial engineering student recruited for an internship at LiquidShare took part in the construction of this post-trade solution. Code analysis and code compliance with legal and technologic regulations were also a mission of the intern.
The student was also in charge of defining the blockchain technologic roadmap in collaboration with the product development team.
Required skills were knowledge of the trade and post-trade processes, knowledge of development and architecture for blockchain and DLT, as well as command of IPFS, docker or Swarm.
Trader assistant at Dexia Credit Local
The intern hired by Dexia work directly in the trading room, at the rate derivative product desk.
Missions included positioning and maintenance of Strip_XL pricers (C++) for the desk and other departments such as asset or DCR.
The ESILV financial engineering student was also in charge of maintaining the daily monitoring of the structuration and trading books P&L in order to prepare the sign-off.
In order to complete this mission, the student was expected to master financial products. IT and regulatory framework knowledge also was a required skill.
VBA developer for Barclays France
As part of the middle office team, the intern had two main missions at Barclays France.
Contributing to the evolution and automation of the tools enabling coordination of activity, reporting and indicators, as well as project ownership for the creation and evolution of trade tools.
This work placement required knowledge of IT tools such as Excel and VBA.
A risk analysis mission for Natixis
Bank Natixis entrusted the engineering student with the setting up and monitoring of financial management indicators and an improvement of a modelisation tool.
Required skills included knowledge of asset classes, risk analysis, investment simulation and C programming.
Assistant to the Relationship Manager at Qatar National Bank
This work placement at Qatar National Bank consisted in assisting the relationship manager in several tasks: preparing comprehensive credit proposals for customers, preparing credit reviews in line with risk factors and the latest developments in the industry, market and business.
Other missions were related to the maintenance of timely review of credit applications and documents within set turn-around time, in coordination with Credit Risk as well as assistance to the Treasury Dealer Team in their day to day tasks.
This work placement addressed a financial engineering student with a command of credit Risk & Strategy, VBA, Bloomberg and a knowledge of compliance.
