ESILV has moved up one place and now ranks 8th overall among the 122 engineering schools indexed by the Usine Nouvelle’s 2020 ranking. Leonardo da Vinci School of Engineering is the first among post-bac engineering schools according to the newspaper, and it ranks 2nd for its international outlook and 6th for the integration of graduates into the job market.
L’étudiant magazine, Usine Nouvelle and Figaro are well-renowned newspapers that publish University league tables every year.
As a newspaper that is primarily aimed at industrial companies, the newspaper’s list ranking takes into consideration the students’ evolution during and after their engineering degree studies.
Each year, Usine Nouvelle magazine publishes its survey of best graduate engineering schools, one of the favorite academic orientation tools used to provide information about the schools that best meet the expectations of companies and students.
In 2020, ESILV moves up to a position to 8th place in the overall ranking. The school retains its leading position among the post-baccalaureate schools included in the ranking and reinforces its position in the top 10 best French schools, across all specialisations.
To establish its 2020 ranking, the Usine Nouvelle editors compared 122 schools, which were rated according to the Commission des titres d’ingénieurs (CTI)-certified data and after having checked the information with the participating schools.

This year again, the ranking is based on four main criteria. For each criterion there is a list of sub-indicators :
- The international criterion (percentage of students employed abroad, students having spent at least 6 months abroad on a work placement, percentage of students having spent at least 6 months abroad on an academic exchange; percentage of students holding a foreign qualification; percentage of students having obtained an international double degree).
- The integration criterion (average starting salary for graduates one year after graduation; percentage of graduates on permanent contracts within two years after graduation; percentage of graduates who found a job in less than two months; the compulsory internship period during the engineering cycle).
- The research criterion (percentage of teachers or contributors with a research activity; percentage of graduates who have been immersed in research thesis; number of theses carried out under the supervision of school faculty during the previous calendar year)
- The entrepreneurship criterion (number of students supported in creating their own companies through entrepreneurial acceleration programmes over the last 5 years; percentage of entrepreneurial students pursuing the engineering master’s degree).
Post-graduation employment and international openness are the two main criteria which account for 65% of the final mark.
Among the 122 schools ranked, ESILV occupies second place in terms of international openness and 6th place in terms of graduate employment, the key criteria for large industrial companies in judging the schools’ added value.
ESILV’s engineering students collaborate with companies throughout their entire engineering school through projects, internships or conferences held by professionals. Students work on concrete problems and constantly confront their own knowledge with the business’ reality.
A customizable classification available in free access
The ranking, which is freely available on the Usine Nouvelle website, enables viewers to perform a personalised comparison of engineering schools based on their speciality, region, financing (public or private system) or mode of admission (post-baccalaureate or bac +2).
Schools can also be classified by category (international, employment, research, entrepreneurship), in order to better understand the expectations of companies and students.
This year, the editors chose to rank only those schools with more than 80 students and the schools who answered all the journalists’ questions about the performance criteria.
