Student engineers participated in the SUCCESS project as it celebrated a significant milestone in their journey through various events organized by partner universities at ESILV. Among these, a Hackathon on artificial intelligence and its societal challenges and a roundtable on the effects of AI on language learning brought 20 students from four European universities together.
This event allowed participants to explore innovative applications of AI while strengthening their communication skills and acquiring knowledge.
The “SUCCESS” Project in a nutshell
The “SUCCESS” Project (Solutions for Unified Communication Competences for Engineering Students and Specialists) is a pioneering European initiative to enhance engineering students’ communication, soft skills and language learning.
By bringing together university partners and stakeholders, SUCCESS aims to create an encouraging environment for communication and language learning and developing technical and social skills necessary in today’s professional world.
This collaborative project brings together four partner institutions: Riga Technical University (Latvia), Technical University of Dresden (Germany), Polytechnical University of Cartagena (Spain), and De Vinci Higher Education in Paris (France). A host university welcomes partner universities every six months, each selecting five engineering students to participate in activities and projects.
The SUCCESS programme at ESILV: An Artificial Intelligence and its Societal Challenges Hackathon
The Hackathon was the primary initiative in the spotlight during the week. Organized by the Soft Skills department, it welcomed students from three European universities to take part in the Hackathon week.
The aim of this Hackathon was twofold: to understand how AI is perceived in society and to identify innovative solutions to concrete problems. To this end, cross-functional teams came up with innovative solutions to highlight the importance of inclusion, sustainability, and ethics in the practices and uses of AI.
Entitled “Artificial Intelligence and its societal challenges”, the cross-disciplinary Hackathon brought together 1,600 students, of which European students and staff participated in a Hackathon on the theme of “Artificial intelligence and its societal challenges.”
A roundtable discussion on the theme “AI in service of languages?” was also organized, bringing together experts in the field to discuss the advantages and risks of using artificial intelligence in language learning.
SUCCESS programme, in the words of an ESILV student
The experience of the SUCCESS project has been particularly beneficial for participating students. Sasha, class of 2025, an engineering student participating in the project, testifies to the positive impact of this initiative on his English language learning journey.
After participating in the Dresden sessions in February 2023 and Paris last week, Sasha highlights enriching his English and improving his technical and soft skills through SUCCESS.
The “Soft skills” acquired as part of the project have been precious for Sasha, allowing him to understand his functioning better and stand out in job interviews. In addition, courses taught in English have strengthened his vocabulary and confidence in a professional environment focused on Biotech Health, his area of study.
Over the past two years, nearly 100 students and staff from four countries have benefited from the enriching experience of European cooperation within the SUCCESS project, funded by Erasmus+. This project continues to significantly improve communication and language learning and develop future engineers’ and specialists’ skills while promoting international collaboration and cultural exchange.
