Da Vinci Junior: 3 Examples of Junior-Enterprise Missions Led by ESILV Engineering Students

Junior-Enterprises are not unique to business schools! There is also a potential for technical missions or high-stakes innovation situations: upgrading the pieces of equipment at the fablab, modelling and building a collection of modular shoes and conceptualizing an eco-responsible container for a new 100 percent French beverage.

DeVinci Junior puts together the skills of students belonging to 3 three schools: ESILV Graduate School of Engineering, EMLV Business School and IIM Institute of Internet & Multimedia. The Pole’s  Leonard de Vinci Student-Run Business Association performs a wide range of services for companies, which will enable students to practice the theoretical knowledge they gained through their graduate degree programs.

The student association creates added value for the companies by putting the new technologies at the service of the client companies through big data market studies, databases and products. De Vinci Junior’s activity is made possible by the equipment and the tools it has been utilising, thanks to the De Vinci Fablab association.

ESILV engineering students who joined the Pole’s Junior Enterprise have recently worked on three projects as part of their consultant work. The common point between these projects is that all of them rely on 3D technologies.

Two contributions to the Courbevoie FabLab upgrade and the training of the FabLab team

As a part of the contract with the City of Courbevoie, DeVinci Junior has carried out two studies to support the launching of the Fablab of the “Briand Ecollective” in Courbevoie. The first study involved the logistics’ management, the use of 3D printing machines and CAD systems.

The second study, which aimed to provide specific 3D training to the Fab Lab Manager and  to initiate new team members into the project led to the opening of the Courbevoie Fablab on October 1, 2019.

The same consultant, Zacharie Guillaume, managed the three phases of the project :

  • Providing training to refine and refresh Fab Lab Manager 3D skills, covering maintenance instructions
  • Introduction to laser cutting
  • Introduction to the hot press and to the column drill

3D modelling study and design of a series of modular footwear

The client company, a young enterprise wishing to test several innovative solutions on different markets, contracted the Pole’s  Leonard de Vinci Student-Run Business Association, to create 3D models for modular shoemaking.

3D design of the Kit Shoes model

The contract specifications said that the final product would allow the user to swap different straps on different soles and to change the heel heights from 3 to 6 cm.

After he’s completed the market research, the consultant – an engineering student from ESILV – had to create 3D models and designs of the different parts of the shoe. He designed the model in SolidWorks and created 3D models for a series of seven sizes which starts with a women’s size 36.

A first model of the size 36 was 3D printed thanks Pole’s Léonard de Vinci FabLab printers .

Market study for the startup Pairdry : logo and 3D beer mug

The creators of Pairdry – a drink 100 percent French pure, and a beer alternative made with mirabelle plums – called on the De Vinci Junior’s services to design a logo and a beer mug that had to stand out from other eco-friendly models, while respecting the product constraints: about 30cl, stackable and environmentally responsible.

3D cups designed for Pairdry

Thanks to the job the ESILV consultant has done, the very first French brand to offer a low alcohol alternative to beer was able to market its first glasses logoed Pirdry, made from corn fibre.

Working as a consultant for a student-run business association is more than a way to stand out in a job interview by advertising your work experience. It also represents an additional way for students to finance their studies in engineering school.

DeVinci Junior provides student services for a fee and recruits students from the Pole Leonard de Vinci for consultant work. The student consultants are supported by the De Vinci Junior all along the market research process, during the negociation, project management phases and as they highlight their achievements.
