Célia Barras combined her computer science studies with a work-study experience in a growing company. This opportunity allowed her to start thinking about her professional project shortly. Here is her testimony.
My name is Célia. I am currently in my fifth year at ESILV. I am in the IOS major, i.e., Computer Science, Connected Objects, and Security.
After obtaining my baccalaureate, I started a first-year degree in health sciences. However, I could have found this programme more satisfactory, which led me to change direction and turn to ESILV.
The course in a nutshell
Throughout the year, the Connected Objects & Cybersecurity major offers courses that include lectures and practical work. The tutorials focus more on technical aspects, such as network development and RGPD standards, to have a solid framework for cybersecurity and IoT.
Computer Science, Connected Objects and Security major trains software engineers with a strong security culture for systems and connected objects, from their design phase to their integration into enterprise ecosystems.
There are also technical projects throughout the year, either as part of the tutorials or the Industrial Innovation Project 4. For example, last year, I had the opportunity to design a drone vulnerable to cyber threats as part of this project.
The creation of a professional project thanks to ESILV
During my fourth year, I did an internship at Gatewatcher. This start-up, now considered an SME, specializes in cybersecurity and is located on the Cyber Campus at La Défense. In this company, I work as a Python developer and a software engineer specialised in this language.
My job is to collect data by creating data collectors that extract information from specialised sites, social networks, and other sources. This data is then stored in a database to be analysed and sold to our clients.
I joined this company in my fourth year and currently pursuing my career plan with the company in my fifth year.
I may continue to work for this company in the future.
Training with a strong added value
I gained strong technical skills in areas such as programming, but I also learned a lot about soft skills.
These skills enabled me to work effectively in a team and to handle all kinds of situations successfully, especially before starting my major.
The school also teaches us to handle all situations technically and emotionally effectively. We are encouraged to be prepared for anything, seek out the information we need, including technical data, and be self-sufficient.
One major, several sectors of activity
This major is open to all men and women who plan to work in IT or IoT. Thanks to this training, we can explore different sectors of activity.
For my part, I chose to specialise in CTI (Cyber Threat Intelligence), which combines IT and cybersecurity. However, it is possible to enter the field of cybersecurity through network development or in industry.
All profiles can flourish in the IOS major. The main thing is to have a solid base and a curiosity to explore new things, even without necessarily having a prior passion for the field.
Computer science is accessible to everyone as long as you have the means to do so. Although the IOS major focuses on connected objects and IoT, it is possible to succeed even if you come from a different background.
The IOS major offers a wide variety of jobs and opportunities after graduation. It teaches us the basics, but it is up to us to continue learning and developing our skills in the areas we are passionate about.
